Are you impressed by the Haystack Rock in Canon Beach? Well, it’s small-time compared to the one in Pacific City, Oregon. They are both called Haystack, and people may assume the one on Canon Beach is larger because it is closer, but the one in Pacific City is higher by over 100 feet. It sits out in the water further so that it may look smaller.
I love Pacific City! It has some pretty amazing views and sand hills that lead you to more beautiful views, and it is usually less crowded than Canon Beach!
There are a couple of restaurants and small shops, but this beach town isn’t just about attracting tourists for shopping; it is about enjoying nature and chilling! You have everything you need, including a grocery store that is a 5-minute drive away. If you do like shopping, there is a cute thrift store. I am not a typical souvenir gal, so when I came back with an oar as a souvenir, my husband was like??? Yeah, it hangs in my office to this day, LOL!
The sand mountain that kids of all ages like to slide down, and if you trek up the sand mountain, you get the most gorgeous views of caves and cliffs with crashing waves you will ever see. It is hard to climb these mountains, but it is a must!
I like being in nature; it is a perfect beach to hang out. There are plenty of waves for surfing and bodyboarding, but even in the summer, the water can be pretty cold, so you may need a bodysuit if you’re going deep in the ocean.
When we stayed there, we loved staying at Cape Kiwanda RV Park. We went a few years without a trailer and stayed in the cabins at the RV park, which we loved. These spaces are a little tight, so be warned. What is most appealing in this part, though, is the proximity to the beach. You are on the sand in 5 minutes and in the water in 10 minutes.
There are some nice trails and paths to walk along the water. On my walk, I saw these places: Kiwanda Coastal Properties if you want a home to rent.
We love climbing the sandhill.
It is easiest to do it barefoot. If you climb the sand hill and go slightly to the left, there are some of the most amazing views of Oregon’s coast.
You can also get some epic views of the Haystack rock there, and it is a perfect place for photographs. I have seen a few brides climbing that hill in their dresses.
The sand is very fine, sometimes I like wearing my Lacross neoprene boots and surf pants to climb the hill. It is usually pretty cool there in general and especially up there, so you will be fine and comfortable in boots and pants…
Surfing is popular on the beach in Pacific City for all levels of surfing. It has a wide variety of waves to choose from. Make sure you bring a wetsuit; the water is cold!
Skimboarding is a newer sport that is done on beaches like Pacific City.
Sandboarding is similar to snowboarding, except on sand. There is a huge sand dune right on Pacific City Beach, and we see people going down it all the time. It is something that can be done standing or sitting.
Other points of interest
Three Capes Scenic drive starts at pacific City and goes north to Tillamook; on the way are beautiful coastal drives and Cape Lookout State Park if you want to pull over and take in the views.
You can also run into Cape Meares Lighthouse about 25 miles north on the Three Capes Scenic Drive. The kids loved it. They also loved the Octopus Tree, the longest Sitka spruce in the world.
Lincoln City is 20 miles south, includes a golf course, and is a tourist location. It has a mall and loads of places for shopping and restaurants. During the summer, parking can be a challenge.
Gray Whales can be seen from the shore and local locations, so I would bring binoculars, a camera, and a tripod, and take your time checking out the ocean. I was lucky enough to see one of these beauties up north at Ecolo Park, but I could not see it very well. It was pretty awesome knowing what I was seeing and seeing it play in the water 🙂
The City of Tillamook is located close to Pacific City, and it is worth the short drive. It is about 20 miles north of PacifC City. There, you can visit the Tillamook Creamery and take a tour. They have a factory tour and a huge restaurant where you can sample all kinds of cheese and ice cream made in the factory. They have a small grocery store you can stock up on daily to take home.
