We have been to Cannon Beach, Oregon a couple times and we are 100% due for another trip! Home of one of the Haystack Rocks… Yeah there is actually 2 haystack rocks on the Oregon Coast! The other , larger one is a short distance south in Pacific City, Oregon.

Cannon beach is just off Highway 101 and right next to the beautiful town of Seaside! Everybody knows about the Haystack Rock in Cannon beach. It was made famous by the Goonies movie. Haystack Rock in Cannon Beach is iconic to everybody and anybody who grew up watching that movie! The small town owns that famous rock and built tourism around it. Ecola State Park is right next to haystack rock, and you get a bird’s eye view of it. The town really isn’t surprising they filmed that movie there. It truly is a magical place and is a perfect place for pirates.. so it worked out perfectly!
I would always suggest you all need to just go, grab a cup of coffee and take a walk to the rock! Cannon is a great place for couples, solo travel, or families… sandy beaches, and you can dip your toes in the water, have a bonfire, picnic, or just have some zen moments in nature.
The beach itself is a little different than what you usually see on most other beaches. Haystack rock and a couple of other rocks hang out on the shoreline; it is not just the miles of sand. There are steep Cliffs and parks all around the beach as well!
A few years back, we stayed in a cabin at the Sea Ranch Park, and what I loved about it was the location. It offers tent camping, cabins and full size hook ups!
The best part of the park for us is the location. As soon as you leave the park and walked across the bridge, you can easily walk through downtown and browse through the cute shops, eateries, coffee shops, and ice cream shops. It was also an easy walk to the beach. Like Seaside, it had that small-town feel and had those friendly and positive vibes.
It was no the most fancy park, but it was all about the location! It is across from Ecola State Park and with in walking distance of downtown.
. Cannon Beach’s RV Resort is a full-service, full-hookup facility that can accommodate campers from pop-up trailers to RVs.
Wright’s for Camping is a small tent campground set in the woods. A family run business since 1959 with 22 campsites with a fire ring and picnic table at each site.
he one tip I have is you will want to book your accommodations as early as possible, months advance especially if you are going in the summer.
There is a ton of places to choose from. Everything from Airbnb’s, Bed and Breakfasts, Hotels and Inns! You will be able to find everything from Luxury travel locations to budget travel locations. Again, you will want to book your accommodations as early as possible, months advance especially if you are going in the summer.
I usually go o one of the travel apps, VRBO or Airbnb to start searching for accommodations when I travel.
Ecola State Park is just north of Cannon Beach, and it is one of those “Must See” locations. You can see the rocks (again from Goonies) from the cliffs, and if you take a trail or walk on the cliffs, you can sometimes see the whales cruising the waters. It is one of the most beautiful parks I have seen; the views are epic. Take your camera and if you got one, a zoom lens…. Something that zooms further than 70mm… While I was there in October in 2020 I did see a whale out there along with other people, but my lens on the camera could not get a good shot! Sad!

Haystack is just as impressive in person as it is in photos. If it is low tide, you can walk right up to the rock. There are little pockets of tide pools along the base of Haystack Rock, and the kids love in it because you can see sea creatures in there, and it feels pretty safe for little kids since the rock breaks up the waves.
It is unusual, but I guess that is why it made an appearance in the Goonie movie and played a significant role in that movie as an important landmark. The rock is also a nesting site for many seabirds, including terns and puffins.
Fun Fact – It is a 235-foot rock in the middle of the beach. Impressed by the Haystack Rock in Cannon beach? Well, it’s a small-time compared to the one in Pacific City. They are actually both called Haystack, and people may assume the one on Cannon beach is larger because it is closer to the beach, but the one in Pacific city is higher by over 100 feet. It just sits out in the water further, and so it may look smaller.
