I am going to run down the basic essentials on this blog so you can have can iron clad packing list for -40 degree weather, because like I said it is a different kind of cold 🙂
People who head to the 49th state in negative degree temps have one bucket list item in mid, they come to Alaska to see The Northern Lights! Like most visitors who come to Fairbanks, I was there to see the Aurora. We also planned local fun adventures, so IF the weather was not cooperating, we did some really amazing adventures that are classic to Fairbanks, Alaska.
Alaska in the dead of winter was way more amazing than I expected. I went to get that bucket list experience with the Auroras but did not expect to love the beautiful landscape and long sunrises.
I spend a couple weeks up there in January and all of March and I have some good solid advice for having the best trip ever… Keep reading for your virtual tour guide experience
It’s cold 🥶 You want to bring the proper clothes!
Hand Warmer tip I have for using the hand/ body or foot warmers is to activate them at least 15 minutes before you use them; it takes a few minutes to warm up! When it came to negative degree temps you will love hand and foot warmers Stock up and bring them. Put hand armers in your pockets and close to your heart.
Merino Wool Silk Down Polyester Fleece Synthetic Blends. You will also want to layer those socks! Merino wool, Synthetic or blended materials rated for freezing cold temps will do. If you get a blend, you should get a high percentage of merino wool, like over 50%.
Tips for choosing a base layer – it needs to be fitted but not too tight. It helps keep you from getting cold but does not necessarily keep you warm. You want any sweat-wicking material.
I like 32° brand, and I have a couple of Cabela/Polartec brands.
Subzero jacket for at least -40 – wind/ waterproof
Thick and longer, the better
Sub Zero boots (a size or two too big) -40 or lower
Socks – long – wool (silk for base layer)
Merino Wool Socks – a lot of them to layer them
Head
Pants
